The SARS-CoV-2 new strain was found in the UK and it has been constantly mutating. Many countries have now canceled flights to the UK and are taking preventative measures to avoid the spread of this new strain. It has currently been named VUI (Variant Under Investigation) 202012/01.
“Over the last few days, thanks to our world-class genomic capability, we have identified a new variant of the coronavirus, which may be associated with the faster spread in the South of England,” said UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock in a statement and the World Health Organisation has been notified by the UK.
About the coronavirus variant
Mutations have been seen in the genomic area of novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and it has been found as more transmissible than the previous variant. In theory, the new virus may be more infectious than the previous one. The mutation has been identified as “N501Y” in the area of the spike protein. The research is still ongoing and the transmissible nature of this virus may or may not be because of the mutation.
Effects of the new strain
Currently, there is no evidence that the new strain may be more fatal and severe than the previous strain. The investigation is still ongoing. “We know that mutations in the spike protein, the part of the virus that makes it infectious, can change how the virus interacts with human cells,” PHE said in a statement.
There is not enough data to conclude anything but the reproducibility rate of this new strain is fast. Further studies are needed and are being done. Till then, it is best to take the necessary precautions and practice social distancing to keep yourself and others safe.
