China is the world’s largest market for beef, pork and poultry. But over the years, Chinese restaurants are looking forward to focusing on healthy eating and are paying more emphasis on meatless, organic and environmentally-friendly diet. It has also been found that the vegetarian markets have never been so competitive as now in China.
China’s largest city, Shanghai is where the number of vegan outlets increased drastically from 49 in 2012 to more than 100 last year. A research says that the overall demand has declined over the years although the country is still the biggest market for meat. As per a study, the Chinese meat industry adds around 150 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere every single year!
Accepting vegetarianism is becoming common which can especially be seen in China with people now loving more of fruits and vegetables. If UN trade figures are to be believed, China’s import of Avocado’s increased from 1.9 tonnes to 25,000 tonnes, which compels one to imagine how there is an overall change in the likes of food habits of the people of China.
There are also speculations that there would be a 17 percent increase in the vegan market in China between 2015 and 2020. There are also health campaigns being held to influence people’s habit with events too to promote vegetarianism. World vegetarian outfits say, in India where vegetarianism is in roots, there are around 500 million vegetarians. The same way the vegan culture is also spreading its roots in China as more and more people are adopting it.
