Every year on the first Tuesday of May World Asthma Day is observed to raise awareness about chronic disease. This year the theme is ‘Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions’, which aims at clearing misconceptions related to the complications of asthma.
History

In collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Asthma Day was founded by Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) in 1993 and was later observed in more than 35 countries.

What is Asthma:

Asthma is a condition of chronic disease which hinders the respiratory system, causing difficulty in breathing. This can make breathing difficult, can trigger frequent coughs and wheeze.

The worst part about it is that this condition cannot be cured, but effective measures can lessen the chances of its danger.

Common Misconceptions

Asthma is psychological: Asthma symptoms have been linked to anxiety and depression, but asthma isn’t a psychological condition.

Children Outgrow Asthma : Asthma is a chronic, lifelong condition, and anyone who suffers it may face a flare-up at any time in their life, from childhood to old age.

Medicines that Treat Asthma Are Habit-Forming –Inhalers and orally administered medications aren’t addictive.

People with asthma shouldn’t exercise: According to a study people with asthma who participated in physical activity during their free time were almost 2.5 times more likely to avoid asthma flareups than those who didn’t exercise.

Asthma can’t be fatal: Fatalities due to asthma are rare, but they do happen.

Let us promise ourselves to take more precautions from Asthma and to have surroundings that are clear and free from toxins. Happy World Asthma Day.
