Here are some facts about Tuberculosis:

 

Today on World Tuberculosis Day, we share some shocking facts and truths about this infectious disease usually caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

  • Over 20 Lakh cases of Tuberculosis happens in India, making it the second largest country to contribute to the mortality rate.
  • The TB bacteria affects the lungs and if it is unnoticed than it can spread throughout the body and cause infection in other parts of the body including kidney, brain, uterus and even fallopian tubes.
  • Genital TB is becoming a cause of concern for both the partners at the time of conceiving.
  • Over 50% of females are suffering from genital TB and in about 95% cases, the infection was found to affect the fallopian tube, 30% ovaries and 50% endometrium.
  • Studies suggest that it can occur in any age group (15-45 years) but the average age found is 31 years.

  • The effects of the disease can also be seen in postmenopausal women where the condition may be major with few symptoms.
  • Young women have a high risk of HIV and TB as compared to young men.
  • This also affects male where a reduction in sperm quality, concentrations, and motility are some traits.
  • To prevent TB one needs to stay away from regular contact with people who are infected, undergo physical exams on daily basis and get vaccinated against the condition.
  • People infected with TB bacteria have a 10% lifetime risk of falling ill with it again.
