Side Effects of Not Brushing your Teeth

Most of us have a habit of brushing and flossing teeth daily, however this is not the case with everyone. There are a lot of people who have a bad oral hygiene routine and this can be problematic in the long run. We know the benefits of brushing teeth, but no one ever tells us the side effects of not brushing. So here are some awful side effects of not brushing teeth:

Gum disease makes your gum red, swollen, and quick to bleed, it is the result of the bacteria in the plaque that builds up between your teeth and gums. The building up of bacteria happens when you don’t brush your teeth.

  • Bacteria

When you don’t take out time to brush your teeth before breakfast or going to bed, you allow the bacteria to stay in the mouth. When bacteria is left undisturbed in your mouth, plaque starts to build up along the gums and between your teeth. Regular brushing reduces plaque which doesn’t let the bacteria build up in your mouth.

  • Tooth Decay

If tartar is left undisturbed on your teeth it can lead to serious problems with your overall oral health. Bacteria hiding under tartar can cause teeth to weaken and decay, eventually resulting in cavities.

  • Bad breath

Bad breath is clinically called halitosis, and it is a result of poor oral hygiene. Food particles that stay longer after meals can start to stink and the less you brush and floss, the more potentially bacteria grows in your mouth. Regular cleaning of your tongue is also important.

  • Risk of heart disease

Studies depict that there is a link between poor oral health, gum disease and heart disease. This happens as bacteria causing inflammation, bleeding, and bone loss around teeth can also get into the bloodstream to the arteries. This can lead to restricted blood flow to the heart.
