When you smoke during pregnancy, that toxic brew gets into your bloodstream, your baby’s only source of oxygen and nutrients which is why pregnant ladies should stay away from smoking. 1. Fertility Issues

If you are planning to conceive, then both you and your partner should not do it as smokers have more fertility issues than the nonsmokers.

2.  Miscarriage

Miscarriage is the saddest thing that a mother goes through; generally, it occurs in the first three months of pregnancy. At times it also happens after 20 weeks of gestation which is called a stillbirth. Cigarettes contain dangerous chemicals that raise the risk of both these tragic occurrences.

3. Preterm Birth

Preterm birth means when a baby is born too early. Smoking during pregnancy is one of the reasons for this type of birth. Children who are born in this stage are associated with several health risks like visual and hearing impairments, learning issues, behavioral problems and complications that could result in death.

Low birth weight is a serious condition which can cause health problems and disabilities like developmental delay, cerebral palsy and hearing or vision ailments. Many babies are born with a low birth weight because of smoking.

A heart is a very sensitive part of the body and smoking increases the chances of heart problems in babies. Not leaving cigarettes at the time you conceive can result in serious heart defect in baby.

6.  Brain Problems

Cigarettes have injurious chemicals that can be very harmful to the newborn and can affect the child’s mind.  Children of smoker parents have more probability to get problems such as behavioral troubles, learning disorders, and low IQs.
